Your tooth enamel is made up of a complex matrix of microscopic mineral crystals. Its dense structure is what gives your teeth the necessary hardness to bite, chew, and grind the foods you eat. Unfortunately, there are times when a blow to the face or some minor form of oral trauma can chip one of your teeth.

When this happens, the damaged tooth enamel could eventually come to harbor bacterial deposits. In time, this could foster a cavity to develop deep inside the already distressed tooth. Without timely treatment, this could cause an infection to form in the root of the tooth or even result in tooth loss.

Dr. Philippe Athuil might be able to prevent tooth decay from forming by applying a simple filling. If the chip is large or on a critical biting surface he might recommend replacing the entire tooth enamel layer with a dental crown.

This type of dental restoration is designed to replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a nearly perfect replica cast from porcelain, gold, or an alloy of base metals.

Dr. Philippe Athuil will numb the area, before removing the entire tooth enamel layer. This will remove any decayed matter while leaving behind an anchoring abutment made from the healthy dentin layer of the tooth.

One of Dr. Philippe Athuil’s staff will prepare an impression of the area, including the corresponding teeth in your dentition. This will be sent to our dental lab where your permanent crown will be created.

When your crown is ready we will call you back in to cement the crown onto the abutment with a special dental adhesive.

If you live in the Beverly Hills, California area and you have a tooth with a chip, you should call 310-286-2241 to seek treatment and restoration.
