You probably know how important it is to brush teeth twice every day, once in the morning and once in the evening. However, many people are not aware of the bad teeth brushing habits that they may be guilty of. Dr. Philippe Athuil and our team have compiled this list of bad brushing habits to break for a healthier smile.

Toothbrush Age
If you only replace your toothbrush when you come to our dental office, you are keeping your toothbrush for too long. A toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months. Also, if a toothbrush’s bristles begin to look frayed or broken, it is time to replace your toothbrush.

Brushing After Meals
If you’d like to go the extra mile and brush after meals, that’s fine. However, be mindful to wait 30 minutes first, especially if you had anything acidic, like soda or lemonade. You may drink water or chew sugarless gum while you wait to regain that clean, fresh feeling.

Toothbrush Drying
We advise against keeping your toothbrush in a closed container. Let your toothbrush dry upright in the open air. This keeps germs from growing as easily.

Toothbrush Bristles
Toothbrushes with hard bristles can wear down the tooth enamel. Choose a brush with soft, or even extra soft, bristles to help protect your teeth.
